For Schools
HealthTec - Designed for Providers of Education
HealthTec was created through partnership working between the health and education sectors with the aim of creating curriculum based hands-on learning experiences for young people to promote science and health and social care and the employment opportunities the NHS provides.
Facilities at the centre include an ambulance, an A&E triage area, a hospital ward bed, rehabilitation room and a mock bedsit to allow students to get hands on with real equipment, motivating and enthusing them with their learning and encouraging progression. Interactive scenarios mapped to the 14-19 curriculum are delivered in these authentic health and social care settings by qualified health professionals.
All scenarios have been developed in response to feedback from teachers and providers of education and cover a wide spectrum of the curriculum which can be adapted to meet the needs of various ages and abilities.
HealthTec South West is an accredited Asdan Centre through the HealthTec franchise. For schools and colleges which are Asdan accredited themselves students can gain credits for CoPE through attending HealthTec scenarios and undertaking the St John Ambulance Young First Aider Certificate. A combination of these can provide up to 4 credits towards CoPE.
We also deliver the Wider Key Skills Qualification 'Improving own Learning and Performance' through the Young First Aider Certificate and additional activities.
HealthTec South West is continually developing the Asdan offering so please get in touch for further information.

HealthTec South West Scenarios
The Patient Journey - students experience the patient journey of a ‘heart attack casualty’ and help to diagnose the reason for the heart attack by looking at their lifestyle. The students will discover the different roles in the NHS and how they work together whilst learning about the science behind the heart attack and the associated treatment. This scenario follows the patient from their home where they will learn the basics of CPR through to rehabilitation passing through A&E, a clinical laboratory and hospital ward where they will also learn about the staff and associated equipment in these areas.

Care of Older People - in our simulated environment students learn how to overcome a variety of physical and sensory impairments by experiencing the difficulties of disabilities and impairments through specialist equipment. Students will experience what it is like to suffer from the various conditions and complaints which affect the elderly such as arthritis and visual impairment by wearing ‘age suits’ and ‘goggles’.

Communication - all forms of communication are explored including the reasons we communicate and the barriers to communication. Students consider how people with restricted methods of communication operate including those with visual and hearing impairments through the use of specialist devices in our simulated environments and by learning forms of communication including the deaf-blind alphabet and Canaan-Barrie.
The cause, effects and treatments of various conditions which impact on communication are also studied.
Forensic Science - students are tasked with investigating a crime scene, looking for evidence and following the procedures of an investigating team to identify their suspect and put them on trial. The scenario requires students to record evidence and learn various techniques such as fingerprinting, collecting fibres and analysing footprints. Working together, students will also issue warrants and take witness statements. This is relevant for students studying forensic science but is also appropriate for the justice element of the SHD Diploma and general science.

E-Mission - this scenario is delivered by video conference to the school from the Birmingham HealthTec Centre. This 90 minute scenario requires groups of students to work in real time to diagnose a patient in a remote part of Scotland before they are transferred to the mainland. Students are required to monitor the patients’ stats, order tests and take samples as required to help them identify what the patient is suffering from.
